Alex Verdi is on the lam. His father has been convicted of a minor drug offense and his family has been torn apart because of it.

He manages to avoid capture when the authorities perform a raid on the family home. Fearing placement in a foster care, he flees to Chicago where he learns quickly the harsh realities of being on his own at such a young age.

Landing a job as a degreaser, not the most glamorous of positions, he finds a cheap room and is able to keep himself clothed and fed.

The police are called in to investigate the matter further and the atmosphere becomes a little too tense for Alex. Within months, he has no other alternative but to move on.

Alex goes through some crazy transitions over time and gradually, his sense of disillusionment begins to fade.

He realizes just how far from his old self he has strayed. However, losing his second family, has caused him to feel vulnerable once again and somewhat paranoid.

After a violent attack leaves him hospitalized, his mother and sister are able to locate him after the attack is publicized in the paper. They bring him news of his father and tell him of plans to reunite.

Once released back into the care of his estranged family, secrets are revealed, lies and lives unravel, and it is left
