In the past few weeks, there have been many reports coming out about new tests, drugs, research, and treatments for Alzheimer's disease. I would like to highlight some of the most recent news for you. Also, I am presenting some Alzheimer's research sites for your information.

Estrogen Reduces Alzheimer's Protein

Postmenopausal estrogen replacement therapy may prevent Alzheimer's disease by reducing the synthesis of beta-amyloid peptides, the short proteins that make up the brain plaques characteristic of the disease, according to a report in the April issue of Nature Medicine.

New Alzheimer's Gene

Three years ago researchers identified a genetic link to Alzheimer's disease called APOE4. Now, the discovery of another susceptibility gene, found in people lacking the APOE4 gene, adds another important piece.

Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh report that a gene associated with an enzyme called bleomycin hydrolase is linked to a four-fold increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Until this discovery, the only known function of this enzyme was to detoxify a widely used cancer agent.

Nymox Researchers Find Revolutionary New Time Bombs in the Human Brain Called "Spherons" Which May be a Major Cause of Alzheimer's Disease

This news was released on Mar. 16, 1998. Scientists at Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation believe that they have found a "major" cause of Alzheimer's.

The Nymox research team has discovered a new human brain entity called the "spheron" which they say satisfies 20 criteria of validity as a causal entity for Alzheimer's disease. This is exciting research and well worth reading.

Study Suggests New Screening Test Can Identify Who Should be Evaluated for Alzheimier's Disease

Information was published on Mar. 12, 1998, about a new screening test which uses a series of questions to assess cognitive functioning. The test can distingush between memory loss due to normal aging and a decline due to dementia.

New Data Shows SEROQUEL Reduces Aggression in a Wide Range Of People With Psychotic Disorders, and Is Well Tolerated

This news released Mar. 16, 1998 states that the new atypical antipsychotic drug Seroquel reduces hostility and aggression in people with psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia and Alzheimer's disease.

Odor Alert: Sniffing May Prepare Brain for Smelling

A rather quirky bit of research but the information released Mar. 18, 1998 states that the loss of the ability to smell, or olfactory problems, is a major problem and also an early symptom for those suffering with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
