Resources for Caregivers

In the United States alone, there are over 25 million people serving in the role of caregiver. With the ever increasing elderly population, the number of people caring for loved ones, family and friends will continue to increase.

Caregiving can be a very difficult, stressful and sometimes seemingly impossible task. It can also be an extremely rewarding, fulfilling and loving endeavor.

In the weeks ahead, I will be discussing all facets of caregiving for Alzheimer's sufferers. This week I would like to begin by presenting several excellent on-line resources for caregivers.

These resources will provide information, education, support and help for those who care for an Alzheimer's sufferer.

Caregiving Resources

Family Caregiver Alliance — This San Francisco-based web site is an outstanding resource for caregivers. It features an on-line support group and on-line caregiver consultation. You can also post caregiving questions to their staff of experts. Their information Clearinghouse contains more than 30 fact sheets and 11 reading lists. The site also contains a News Bureau and Interview section. This site receives my highest recommendation.

National Family Caregivers Association — This site "addresses the common needs of all family caregivers." Services provided at this site include: information, education, support, validation, public awareness and advocacy. A good general site.

Caregiver Network Inc. — Based in Toronto, Canada, this site is "dedicated to making caregiver's lives easier." This site is very comprehensive and includes a bulletin board and Java chat capability.

Caregiving Online — This on-line newsletter has a subscription plan which entitles the subscriber to special offers on books, tapes and other products. In addition to its on-line newsletter, this site also has an on-line journal for caregivers to share with other caregivers. Also available are help topics, tips, resources, a simple test to see if the caregiver is stressed out and an archive of previous articles. This site also sponsers a Caregiver of the Year Contest, to recognize the efforts by special caregivers. A very good site to visit.

Please visit these sites and comment at the end of this article. If you know of any sites by caregivers or have a site of your own, let me know and I will be more than happy to include it.

Please feel free to start a discussion on this or any of my previous articles. I welcome your comments and suggestions.
