I have received several requests for information on Huperzine A so in this article I will explore the current information available about it. The majority of reference web sites I found were basically some information on the product with the ability to purchase online.
Huperzine is a traditional Chinese medicine used to fight fever. It was isolated in the Chinese herbal medicine Qian Ceng Ta. It is extracted from a moss called Huperzia serrata. Purified extract from the moss is being used in China to treat dementia and clinical trials are currently underway in the U.S. using Huperzine A for the treatment of Alzheimer's and Age Related Cognitive Decline (ARCD). Finding information on Huperzine A was a bit difficult but I did manage to find several references and one web site. An article written in the journal JAMA in 1997, talks about the potent inhibiting effect that Huperzine has on acetylcholinesterase. It also appears that it is less toxic than the two currently approved Alzheimer's drugs Tacrine (Aricept) and Donepezil (Cognex). *Editor's Note: I apologize for the poor quality of this article which was published before I finished it.
