Walking for Mama: My Memory Walks, 1997-2004, Part I

I created a couple of Memory Walk collection boxes and this year left one on my desk all year. Just the change that accumulated over the past year totaled $80. I left another collection box at a nearby service station that agreed to allow me to collect there for a few weeks.

Seven years has seen a lot of changes in the Memory Walk in Huntsville, AL where I walk. The first couple of years it was held on the University of Alabama, Huntsville, campus. Then there were two or three years it was held at the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, such a beautiful place, and one year we walked there in pouring rain. For the last two years the Walk was held at Joe Davis Stadium in Huntsville and became a family festival, featuring fun activities for the children and live bands that played into the evening hours. This year we are back to a morning walk, still at Joe Davis Stadium. Every year the amount of money we raise increases, and I am expecting it to be so again this year. Raising money online through the secure Kintera site has given us a means to reach more and more people who can simply donate via credit or debit card.

It has truly become my Memory Walk, the highlight of every year for me, when I can remember my mother and do something positive to help other patients, caregivers, and to hopefully one day bring an end to this disease.

Won't you join me this year? Come walk with me: http://www.huntsvillememorywalk04.kintera.org/ or with your local Alzheimer's Association chapter, wherever you live.
