Growing Things: Gardens and Gardening as Therapy for Alzheimer's Patients


Physically and emotionally, gardens and gardening may be just what the doctor ordered for Alzheimer's patients. "When you smell fresh air and plants it stimulates the lymphatic system of the brain and reduces anxiety ... And this is the first thing we need to do with patients who have dementia is to lower their anxiety stress." [5] It is good medicine for the stressed-out caregiver as well.

In the coming months, as we approach Spring, we will look at gardening activities for Alzheimer's patients and how to best design gardens for their safety and enjoyment.
