So, You Wanna Build a Web Page?

So, the year 2000 is finally here, and you finally got that computer you'd been asking Santa for all these years, complete with a lot of free time on the Internet from various service providers. And, since you got the darn thing, you've been glued to the monitor, surfing the 'net 15-16 hours a day, looking at all the cool web sites out there. Now, you're probably saying to yourself, "These web pages look really good. Could I ever make something like that?" Well, sure you can! And I'm going to tell you how.

The first thing to do, well, you've already done. You've browsed a fair portion of the Internet, and you've seen things you like, and things you don't. So, you've got some idea of what you'd like to incorporate in a website of your own. (If you haven't got a clue what to put in a web page, go browse some personal homepages at Tripod or Yahoo! Geocities.)

Next, you have to find a place to put your home page. Personally, I recommend Tripod, because it has tools for all levels of experience, and you don't even have to have any extra software. You can use most of their tools right there on their website. Make sure you think up a really catchy username, like stargrrl619 or lava_lamp_phreak.

The rest of the web site creation depends on you. How much do you want to learn about web site building and design? With Tripod, you can make QuickPages, which are templates you can use to put text, pictures, and other add-ons with out knowing one lick of HTML. Conversely, you can go to Tripod's sister site, Webmonkey, to learn about HTML and all the other languages and tools of the trade.

But, if you're an impatient person, like I am, you want to make now, then maybe later learn about it. So, get everything together that you want to include in your site, and use QuickPage to put it all together. Make sure you've got some information about yourself, and your hobbies, and be sure to include some links to your favourite web sites. Also, if you have access to a scanner, you can put some photos of yourself, family, friends, pets, and anything else you can capture on film on your web site. Most places that offer hourly Internet access, like cybercafés and some Internet service providers, have scanners and will scan your photos and put them on disk for you for a small price.
