All the Small Things

If you've been on the Internet for a while, you've seen them. You know, those sites that have really nifty graphics and look just plain cool, and then, you notice a flaw in it somewhere, and the web site just loses its charm. Well, there are a few tips you can use that will keep your web site from losing its coolness. First of all, spellcheck! I saw a web site today that (in an animated gif!) spelled "join" as j-i-o-n. Eeesh. Make sure that your text is spelled correctly, or at least misspelled consistantly and understandably. It takes all of two minutes. Secondly, make sure all your colours go together on your page. Dark text on a dark background image just doesn't work. Also, find a colour wheel, and make it your best friend. It'll show you what colours go well together, and what colours just shouldn't be together, period. Thirdly, make sure all your pages have a consistant theme. One page with a happy, sunshine-filled theme, then another with a dark, grim, depressing theme, then wrapped up with a page containing a high-technology theme... it's a web designer's nightmare. Lastly, use everything in moderation! Don't become addicted to using horizontal rules in your pages. gets to be annoying. Know what I mean? Also be sparing in your use of tables, lists, and frames. If you use these small little tricks in your web site, it will make everything seem more together, and make your presentation more powerful.
