How Not To Ride a Lithuanian Bus

ancestors lived? Don't they want me to come away with a good experience?

Apparently not. Apparently some Soviet influence lingers in Kaunas, Lithuania. Apparently I must pay. There are no exceptions.

A little poorer (but thankful I am not in a dark blue police van), I walk halfway back to the train station. When I see a bus go by with the words "train station" on it, I get on. My fine receipt apparently works as a ticket, too. How generous.

So here I am writing, back at the train station just a few hours after I arrived. I never saw central Kaunas. My lesson learned today in post-Soviet Lithuania? Assume nothing, and don't expect sympathy, no matter how much it looks like you're going to cry.

Until next time -- keep traveling -- even when the going gets rough! :) Colleen
