WHERE TO GO: Here are a few of my recommendations of specific places to go in the neighborhoods described above.
2. The Comet (hearty deli sandwiches in a 50's-style grocery) on Columbia Road in Adams-Morgan. 3. Nightclub 9:30, at the "end" of the U Street strip, is the place to go for alternative rock, reggae, hip-hop as well as big-name concerts in an intimate venue. 4. The Kingpin, a real "unknown" on 10th and U St. A candlelit stairway leads to this retro bar with thumping music, Jetsons furniture and friendly staff. Good for after the 9:30. 5. Café Nema, on U St. between 13th and 14th Streets, serves up a mix of Somali, North African and Middle Eastern fare. Their fresh calamari is not to be missed. As always, Happy Alternative Travels! -- Colleen
