WHERE TO GO: Here are a few of my recommendations of specific places to go in the neighborhoods described above.

1. Tryst Coffeehouse (yellow, red and puce velveteen couches give this place character) on 18th St. and Columbia Road in Adams-Morgan.

2. The Comet (hearty deli sandwiches in a 50's-style grocery) on Columbia Road in Adams-Morgan.

3. Nightclub 9:30, at the "end" of the U Street strip, is the place to go for alternative rock, reggae, hip-hop as well as big-name concerts in an intimate venue.

4. The Kingpin, a real "unknown" on 10th and U St. A candlelit stairway leads to this retro bar with thumping music, Jetsons furniture and friendly staff. Good for after the 9:30.

5. Café Nema, on U St. between 13th and 14th Streets, serves up a mix of Somali, North African and Middle Eastern fare. Their fresh calamari is not to be missed.

As always, Happy Alternative Travels! -- Colleen
