IrkedEvery once in awhile I'll run across some TV show that places the blame for some tragedy on the lyrics of some popular song. In the past the popular target was AC/DC's song "Night Prowler."Many groups blamed it for creating a mass murder of the same name. And late the other night I learned that Metallica's "Fade to Black" causes people to kill themselves. Yes, this is true. Well, at least that's what some religious groups would like us to think. Isn't it easy and convenient to blame tragedy on someone else, or better yet something vague like music instead of looking into the mirror? Of course it is! Now, clearly music can impact people's lives and actions for the better or for the worse. But placing the blame of some action on the music is absolving the actor from any responsibility. When people drink and drive, do they get off because it was the alcohol's fault? No, they are held responsible for their actions. They made the choice to drink too much. So when we see groups placing blame on music for some tragedy or violence let's remember that it is those people who made the choice to act - and worse, people who made the choice not to act who are responsible. And not some lyrics.
