Here's a band whose name I've seen many a time and never before had the chance to check out. Recently The Band Geek Mafia, the Voodoo Glow Skulls' latest release, came across my desk and there in front of me lay my chance. Better yet, it turns out I like this band! Maybe the vocals by Frank Casillas leave something to be desired with his almost monotone voice, but ironically this does help create the atmosphere and fits well enough with their style that they pull it off. To describe their sound, I'd say they fall into the gray area between punk and ska drawing
My favorite tracks on the album include "Human Pinata," "Left for Dead," and "Love Letter." I enjoy "Human Pinata" and "Left for Dead" because of their tempo and musical stylings. And you have to appreciate the humor and irony that is "Love Letter." It tells the story of writing your girlfriend a love letter only to discover she doesn't know how to read. At the very least it's a funny track and at best it is pretty clever. The Voodoo Glow Skulls are definitely off the beaten path but I'd recommend their latest album if you're interested in some high-energy fun music. Go To Page: 1
