Not the Artist of the Month: The Flaming Lips Experiment

I should not have expected much from the Flaming Lips as they have for quite sometime been on my let's just say less then favorite list, but the concept they are currently trying sounded interesting.

See, the Flaming Lips Experiment isn't your typical band. What they do is take 40 boom boxes and get 40 audience members to "play" them while band members orchestrate. Now that is original. But does it work?

No! But it could work. It needs someone with musical talent picking the samples to use. Unfortunately, the Flaming Lips folks picked samples that created noise, not music. Yes, there were movements and different layers of sound much like a real orchestra, but unlike an orchestra that creates solidified music, this attempt was closer to random shots of painful noise. In fact, all they managed to accomplish was to give 5,000 audience members pounding headaches. Worse, they sent many fans home early despite the concert having two acts left to perform.

And then to finish the set off they truly showed their lack of creativity by using Meg Ryan's fake orgasm from "When Harry Met Sally." Yes, it's true, that was the one piece the audience enjoyed, but truly it was an admission of their minimal skill. And it showed that their only ability was to appeal to the lowest common denominator.

Despite the original idea, The Flaming Lips Experiment is not the Artist of the Month because they just weren't skilled enough to pull it off.
