College Radio on the Net

In the past I've spouted off about the virtues of college radio and its ability to play new unheard of acts long before they hit the mainstream. Hopefully, you've at least on occasion spun your radio dial all the way down to somewhere between 88 and 92 FM. If so, that's great. But the lack of listeners still exists as real problem for college radio as they may be in small markets, have little wattage or worse yet have poor PR. For example, when college students are asked about college radio here at Iowa State University, often you hear "We have a radio station?" or something to that effect. Well thanks to Real Audio, college radio can now be heard world wide so hopefully more people will recognize college radio as a true alternative.

As I've noted in the past, college radio has been historically more cutting edge then commercial radio, but when it comes to the Internet, college radio is once again on the blazing a new path. In fact, the first Internet radio station was a college station, KJHK 90.7 FM in Lawrence, Kansas. And from the sounds of things they are still at it and going strong.

Another station I ran across was WBER 90.5 FM in New York. They play a mix of commercial and indie material. Further, they will be broadcasting a couple live concerts on the air such as Letters to Cleo, and Shootys Groove.

So if you have a chance, fire up your browser and listen to some new music.
