On occasion a song that on the surface seems simply silly really does say
something. I've been a fan of Cake for a couple years now, their first
hit "Rock'n'Roll Lifestyle" made of point of the silly posturing that
is so popular in today's music.
Where their current hit "The Distance" at first just seems to be a trite story with more time I think everyone can connect with this story. It discusses the person who works hard never gives up, keeps fighting against all odds and never receives any credit. We all know a person who this song describes. In recent sports news the Heisman trophy which is supposed to be given to "college football's best player" was awarded to Danny Weufferel, "college football's best player on a top team." For players not on top teams this lyric seems very appropriate "No trophy. No flowers. No flashbulbs. No wine." As it is clear that the media won't recognize even the existance of talent at schools not inside the highly rated. For our man here at Iowa State University this lyric really hits home "long ago somebody left with the cup," but for Troy Davis' sake we can be happy because unlike Danny Weufferel Troy Davis is truely "Going the Distance."
