Band of the Month: Marcy Playground

I first heard Marcy Playground's single "Sex and Candy" on a Kathode Ray compilation CD and it immediately stuck out as an interesting track with potential. Well, that potential has turned into quite a bit of something, as it has started to receive mainstream attention and in fact is currently charting #1 in some markets.

So if you haven't heard "Sex and Candy" yet? Or you have but you just don't know it yet. Well, hopefully I'll be able to clue you in. At first listen they might sound like a young Nirvana that's been turned down or unplugged. For those of us who still love grunge, Marcy Playground is helping keep the sound alive. Tracks such as "Saint Joe On The School Bus" and "Poppies" remind us of angst driven days of the past while "Sex and Candy" jumps out at you as a possible Nirvana Unplugged track. It's clear that the events within the Seattle scene affected Marcy Playground. Its effects can be seen on tracks like "One More Suicide," and "The Shadow of Seattle." But they have avoided falling into the trap of being called a Nirvana sound-alike. Although they were influenced by the grunge scene, it seems they have taken it in a slightly different direction, allowing grunge to continue but at the same time not being just another Nirvana rip-off band.
