Paul Oakenfold... in the house

© David Reid

As someone who still longs for the sounds of Seattle it's amazing I have yet to listen to the latest Pearl Jam album... And even stranger is that, the reason is that I'm stuck on another disc right now, the "Essential Volume One" which is an electronic/dance mix. And for me it's taken quite sometime but I've finally come around to this whole dance/electronic/techno thing. And Paul Oakenfold is a big reason why. This past year at the recommendation of a friend I picked up Paul Oakenfold's "New York Global Underground" two disc release and had sporadically spun it, and thought it to be good but probably just didn't get it yet. Since that time my time spent at various clubs, such as Chicago's Circus, has slowly increased and well I think I finally get it! Though I'd like to point out I still can't dance to save my life, but well tracks like these I want to!

What he's done is, taken various artists' works, added, subtract, does a little long division and comes up with a non stop completely enjoyable sound. On the "Essential Selection Volume you just can't miss Perfect State's "Perfect State" you know it and at the same time you don't, truly a great track, now there's one I'd just love to hear some day soon in a club. Though listening to the disc in its entirety is for more enjoyable then just pulling one or two tracks out, in fact that's essentially missing the point!

Now I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that disc one of the "Essential Selection Volume One" is mixed by Fatboy Slim but I'm still working my way through that one and really it has been the work of Paul Oakenfold that's sparked most of my interest. So if you think music's been in a serious rut lately (I know I do!) take a visit to your local dance club, and no I don't mean the 80's sing a long, poor man's DJ club. But take in a true club, where local, national, or international DJ's may be performing as the sounds being created will get you moving...

Thoroughly enjoyed the article, but I feel I should point one or two things out. Firstly, Monsieur Oakenfold really doesn't belong in your Indie/Alternative section. Secondly, Paul Oakenfold is, as yo ...
