Introduction to the Music Section

© David Reid

I try to bring something fresh and new to the reader each month with features like the artist of the month and my wide ranging resource list that take into account many different styles of music. I will focus primarily on current events and lesser known acts especially independent artists. I like to cover independent music because there truly is a vast quantity of great music being produced in the independent community. This concept of focusing on the "little guy" will carry through in a large extent on determining which sites I review too.

In music many terms are frequently thrown about with little or no explanation. Terms such as indie, alternative, pop and countless others so I'll give you my "definition" of these terms.

Indie: In a past editorial I defined what I feel indie or independent music means but in short it is people creating music and helping each other out primarily without help of a major label. Independent Community is an unspecific network of people trading ideas and helping each other out within the music scene.

Alternative: This is a tough one. Is a contradiction in itself nowadays it means cool or popular. For a more in depth definition check out 181.4 DftN! Issue 1

Pop: Pop has become as ambiguous as alternative but I use it to describe a more 80s sound ranging from the likes of Madonna to Michael Jackson.
