New Indie Resources

The chance to make it big as a musician today is as difficult as its ever been. To break into the music industry it takes a bit of talent, a bit of luck and, most importantly, you need to know the right people. Luckily there are some people trying to help out the struggling musician. A couple new sites out there show quite a bit of promise in the area of knowing the right people and spreading that knowledge to the musician.

The first site on the list is the Musician's Assistant Site. Much like the 181.4 Music Industry Database, what the Musician's Assistant Site does is provide music industry contacts for the indie artist — free of charge. In its current state it appears to need quite a bit of work, with many records only partially full. But it is a promising site.

The site includes contacts for studios, record labels, audio manufacturers, distributors, venues, promoters, press, radio and much more. It claims that "This web site can guide you, step by step, through everything you need to do to put out records." This statement at least appears to be true in spirit. This site can at least give you a lot of the information along the way when putting out a record. You still need to make your own music, though!

The next site on the list is Ari's Simple List of Record Labels, another new site with invaluable information for the indie artist. It has a large list of links to record labels. More importantly, it includes contact e-mails for most of the labels it lists. Despite the music playing in the background and the less-than-slick look, this site is a valuable resource because of its content.

I hope sites like these will help a new wave of indie artists make it to the next level.
