Oh boy, did I almost miss an important one here! The Pumpkins deserve comment just for their sticking around into the 00s? How could I call myself the Alternative Music Editor if I didn't at least comment on the new Smashing Pumpkins release "MACHINA / the machines of God".
"Raindrops + Sunshowers" follows the opener and as mentioned pulls the pedal back. Although it is still a solid enough track it doesn't hit you like you'd expect after the opener, and because of this it takes awhile to acclimate. What it is, is closer in sound and feel to the rest of the album. Go figure the noise returns on "Heavy Metal Machine", though at the same time it maintaining the methodical, spacey sound of the majority of the album. I'm not sure if the Pumpkins were looking for this vast contrast on the album or not. But planned or not it sets up an amount of tension that will slow the acceptance of this album. It's possible I just haven't changed and evolved as much as the Pumpkins but I'm still looking for the wall of sound from the Pumpkins. The roaring guitars crossing and crashing with the melodic spacey sound, as opposed to just the spacey sound. That said I'm still guessing it'll be a grower, because there's enough Pumpkins here to spark your interest. Go To Page: 1
