Although the value of winning a MTV
Music Video award has never amounted to much more than zip, MTV continues handing them out each and every year. The most interesting event of the evening wasn't any award but Pat Smear of the Foo Fighters leaving the band mid-show and announcing his replacement, Franz Stahl. Stahl stepped right in a performed with the Foo Fighters quite well. Though this wasn't a complete surprise as rumors have circulated for some time now over Pat Smear leaving the
band. What was strange was how he left and the fact that the Foo Fighters had denied those rumors so vigoursly.
Now what MTV Event would be complete without a Marilyn Manson performance? Wel, this one was complete and of course Marilyn Manson performed their canned "I hate" Christians act. Beck's attempt to collect his "Best Director" award was cut off prematurely by a fan wandering about the stage. And Jamiroquai's acceptance for "Best Video of the Year" was just a little to self assured for me. The most intriguing award of the night was the posthumous winning of "Best Rap Video" for Notorious B.I.G. It makes me wonder if Notorious B.I.G.would have won it if he was still alive today. The show as usual included an array of side plots but really not much content.
