Well with a little luck Bob Dole's unfounded attacks on Interscope Records
will end now that Bill Clinton has been reelected. Unfortunately, President Clinton
has pushed ideas of censorship himself, as has Tipper Gore. President Clinton
supported the V-Chip, though this differs from Bob Dole's stance on
censorship in that Bob Dole was out to stop Hip-Hop music that he didn't
like, agree with, or he thought was problematic. Whereas President Clinton's
V-Chip actually would allow parental control, in a similar fashion to
parents not allowing their children to own Playboy or Penthouse magazines,
or simply to watch horror movies. Furthermore, Bob Dole had never even heard
the music he was attacking.
Personally, I feel protecting people from opposing views, ideas, thoughts or even lyrics actually hurts them and therefore hurts society. Music reflects society, at times pointing out positives, at other times pointing out negatives. It also opens a window into other cultures, different than your own. From day one Rock 'n' Roll has been pushing the boundaries and rebelling. And it always will. Regardless of whether or not, you, me, or Bob Dole agrees with the ideas others express in their music. Don't buy it. Change the channel. But don't limit the public's ability to choose. As I said earlier, listening to all sorts of music can open your mind to different cultures and can help you choose your own tastes. This is important because the right to choose is a big part of what makes America unique. So be "American" and defend and apprciate your right for Free Speech. Go To Page: 1
