Covering ThemRecently a lot of talk has revolved around Puffys remake of The Polices "Every Breath You Take." And from what Ive read many people are offended by his use of the reworked song as a tribute and believe he basically stole the song. In truth he covers and reworks the song which to a great extent is simply how music today is created. All music draws from another, though some more obviously then others. Of course theres a line between theft and a cover but what Puffy has done is simply expose another group of music fans to a great song they might not of heard. Further, nothing interests me more at a concert then when a band covers another band. Why? Well, because covering another artists material allows the band to show its influences, expand in different directions and just have fun. What fun it must of been when Pearl Jam broke into "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun." Can you imagine how entirely funny it must have been to see Eddie doing his best Cyndi Lauper impression. And at the other extreme how powerful it was when Pearl Jam broke into Pink Floyds "Another Brick In The Wall." Some people think its shameful and disrespectful for a band to perform anthers work but to me it is the highest sign of respect an artist can show for another. And for the listener it allows us yet another peak inside the artists head. So I say keep on "Covering Them"
