The Internet and the Music Industry

© David Reid

With the growth of the Internet all sorts of music sites are springing up. Music magazines, song databases, lyric archives, band homepages, record labels, and just about anything a music fan or musician may want is out there on the Internet.

The wonderful thing about this expansion is that it allows the independent artists to spread their music inexpensively. Yes, many users visit well known artists' sites but more and more people are checking out bands like Tagyerit that are setting up there own sites with sound clips, band biographies, and whatever else their heart desires. Independent labels use the newsgroups to tell the world what they do and where you can get more information about their bands.

Further helping independent artists/labels are numerous small music magazines(ezines) like Consumable, Fly! Music Magazine, and 181.4 Degrees from the Norm! which are springing up like wildfire, each one trying to become household names like Rolling Stone, and many trying to increase the exposure for independent music. But in contrast to Rolling Stone these small magazines understand the importance of independent music and do their best to cover both independent and commercial music on a level playing field.

Unfortunately the larger companies still receive more press and therefore more traffic on their sites. So hopefully I can bring you some great sites in the coming months that really deserve the attention.
