Grunge/Alternative was sparked not by our laziness but by our anger -- our
emotions about the state of the world.
But it hasn't ended there. In fact, I've always felt this generation -- Generation X -- isn't lazy, bored, "slackers," or losers. In reality, Gen-X started 10 steps behind most other generations and faced a world in turmoil. I recently read an article written by an anonymous Generation Xer that descibed our generation as "children of the '80s" and nothing could be more right on. "Children of the '80s delt with the rise of AIDS, they spent more time with their Atari 2600 then with their parents. Divorce rates are climbing higher then ever, and kids coming home to empty houses has forced an entire generation to grow up quicker then should be expected. And it is this forced growth due to other's mistakes that left Generation X angry but more importantly, now more then ever, ready and eager to fix the wrongs of society. In short, to leave our mark." Some Gen-Xers have already started leaving their mark on the world. The rise of the Internet is quickly become an outlet and an opportunity for this generation to change the world, become succesful or, quite simply, leave our mark. Years of watching the corporate world downsize their parents out of work has influenced Generation X to do it on their own, in their own way, and helped feed that distaste of the status quo. Sites like the hugely popular Yahoo! and Windows95.com were created by twentysomethings and surely more will follow. Generation X truly means that when it's all said and done the world will have a large X marking the spot.
