I know Van Halen is neither Indie nor "Alternative" (though you never know
with the way music is promoted lately) but I just had to comment on this. Is the new Van Halen, with Extreme's former lead singer Gary
Cherone,
set to break up? Sammy Hagar says so, but the mystery remains behind the
beginning of this rumor. Some sources point to Van Halen's manager as the
initial source while other say Sammy Hagar. This statement might simply
be
a publicity stunt to increase Hagar's visability and more importantly
increase sales of his latest release -- or possibly a publicity stunt to help
Van Halen's future efforts before they're hurt by the loss of Hagar
since Van Halen has many long-time fans thrown into turmoil. Regardless of
the truth Van Halen is once again reminding me of the WWF.
If it isn't the manager hitting a Hogan with a tennis racket or the breakup of the Four Horsemen over a girl then it's Van Halen bickering, trash-talking, spreading rumours and backstabbing. Maybe they'll have a cage match and smash guitars over each others' head until someone submits or throws salt in each others' eyes. Better yet, a Royal Rumble that ends with Extreme crashing the ring to save former lead singer Gary Cherone. Odds are it will end with the Rock'n'Roll Express reforming for a short "reunion tour" then breaking up again in a bitter fight over who is "the man." Sadly one of the greatest Rock'n'Roll bands of our time has decided it fit to act more like Hulk Hogan then the stars they once were. Hopefully we'll all pass on their new releases... I hear Van Halen's next album will be called "Starcade '98."
