Sellout this Sellout that...

OK, OK, even with my limited understanding of 'musical commerce', it seems clear to me that the music industry uses a business formula not unlike that of any other successful industry: make music + make a profit = success.

Less clear is the definition of a certain terminology sometimes used in this equation, namely: 'sellout'. Band after band are being labeled as "sellouts". Does this mean: make music + make a profit = sellout? Are 'great band' and 'sellout' synonyms? Evidently not.

The band 7 Seconds makes a funny point in there song "Get a Different Life". They state the fact that some bands are labeled as "sellouts" before they even make a profit solely because their sound has changed. Well here again I become confused. Should a band not grow, learn, experiment and try new directions. Aren't those qualities of a great band. They are for me.

Another example I find strange is the labeling of Green Day as a "sellout" on the grounds that they suddenly became a pop-punk band the moment they signed with a major. In truth their sound hasn't change much over time at all, but that seems to be irrelevant. Surely there is no justification to call them sellouts. Does this mean that the equation really is: make music + sign on with a major record company = sellout?

Maybe the 'sellout' logic stems from bands trying to gain a competitive edge, but it beats me.I wish I was so lucky to do my job well enough to be called a "sellout" Hey, then I would know I must be doing something right.
