The Newest Kids on The Block

The #1 song on Billboard's singles chart is...drum roll please MMMBop? by Hanson. If you haven't heard the Jackson 5 sound-a-likes yet you will - real soon.

You'll probably be innocently driving to work when the phrase "MMMBop" combined with a little bit of scratching will hit your ears. At that point you'll know it's Hanson, the newest kids on the block. The average age of the band members in this group falls below the legal age to drive an automobile in the US!

In the recent past we've had our fill of tot-grunge/metal with Silverchair, and now it's time for a side order of tot-pop to fill us up. And while I won't give these kids any high marks as the second coming or anything remotely close to that, I do feel there is a positive side to their success.

Maybe it's the refreshing sound. Or the apparently free, innocent, youthful spirit that their music carries. But regardless, the music industry has been a bit stagnant recently, and if nothing else these guys have thrown a monkey wrench in the works. Hopefully they'll open a couple doors for some long lasting bands.

As noted above, Hanson won't receive Band of the Month from me anytime soon but you must give them credit. When I was 14, the biggest challenge I had was to break the record on Excite Bike it certainly wasn't putting out a major label release and doing interviews with CNN. So before we shun these kids as one hit wonders remember that if we were all so lucky to have been one hit wonders by 14 we would all be quite a bit happier!
