Marilyn Manson: Shock or rock? How about none of the above...

Oh, joy... lucky us, Marilyn Manson will be allowed to perform at OzzFest '97.

Now, I never support censorship and fight it at every opportunity -- even Marilyn Manson serves a purpose in the music industry. But it would have been nobody's loss if Mr. Manson didn't perform, though I suppose he allows us to see the extreme poor side of today's music and only when you have bad can you have good. So let Mr. Manson feed us his childish lyrics and his rehashed industrial. With some luck soon enough his "fans" will realize that there is much better music being made right now and will jump ship. My suggestion if you need your angry, crazied, frenzied, industrial music, is to check out Prick's album, on Trent Reznor's label Nothing, or better yet pick up "Pretty Hate Machine" by Nine Inch Nails. Why? Because these discs had much more thought go into them.

So in closing I'd like to reiterate that the most shocking aspect of Mr. Manson is not his stage performance but his success. Ironically, once you consider the condition of the music industry today, i.e. whoever gets on MTV wins, then this success isn't all that shocking actually -- it's predictable. Marilyn Manson is taking the music industry "down in it." And I truly hope a real star will steal the spotlight soon and this phenomenon will come to an end.
