It seems to me that nowadays every time I sit down to watch TV I hear a song during a commercial and just wonder who wrote it? I know I've heard that song before! And of course the commercial that is really bothering me right now is the Lotus Notes R5 (I'm a Notes developer) commercial with the song "I am Superman." For the life of me I can't place that one? Swervedriver? Anyone?
Anyhow I started thinking about it and it seems to me many popular artists' music is now being used in commercials. Just for fun I did a little searching around on this topic. My first search lead me to the New Beetle commercials which brought me a great list of songs. If you look down the list it looks much like an Invasion with Hurricane #1, Spiritualized, The Orb, and Stereolab. But what is so interesting to me is how many of these songs represent some of the newest music available. A few other artists of note that recently have added music for commercial play include The Verve, The Chemical Brothers, and the Rolling Stones. But looking at the majority of these it's clear that newer and hiper music is entering the mainstream via alternate routes. Though this isn't a new trend it just seems more regular now than in the past and I wonder if it leads to watered down music? Or does it simply lead to more exposure for new music. What do you think?
