What will be the next big sound? Lately, talk about the next big thing
has been narrowed down to the genres of Techno and Ska. If you're in England you
might say Techno is the next big thing for sure. But if you're in L.A.,
then Ska is your thing. But with the huge success of No Doubt I feel
that
Ska will win out in the end. Styles of Techno including ambient and
trance seem a bit too distant for the radio listener to easily accept.
Another factor is that clubing isn't the big thing for young Americans.
This is probably the decieding factor that will keep techno down for
sometime yet. Further, Techno is still considered too alternative. As I
believe "alternative" nowdays is too closely related to being cool, so the
dictionary definition of alternative and techno still has a ways to go. Ska, on the other hand, has ties with punk which has
been hugely popular over the last few years and is a short step from what is
currently called alternative. So in less then ten rounds I predict that Ska
will get a TKO sending Techno back into the underground for at least a year.
