Artist of the Month: Dubstar© David Reid
First I must say I know very little regarding Brit-Pop but I do know now that I've been listening to Dubstar's album "Goodbye" for a while I've come to realize it's quite a good album. Regardless of its Brit-Pop status this is a band that has universal appeal. It combines solid musical soundscapes with brilliant lyrics. And because of this Dubstar is my artist of the month for October 1998.
Dubstar is clearly led by the combination of Steve Hillier's bitingly intelligent lyrics and Sarah Blackwood's romantic voice. These combine to beautifully and directly get the point across. All of this is then built around wonderful beats. The track "Stars" strikes me as outstandingly smart with lyrics such as, "For my life my god I'm singing." I mean just think about that for a while, someone doing what they enjoy and making a living doing it! How ridiculous. Another smart track, "Just a Girl She Said" goes far beyond No Doubt's "Just a Girl," to dispel the helpless girl stereotype. For example, the lyrics "talk down to me and take me to bed, I don't think I don't feel and I don't really matter at all," are so sarcastic you just can't possibly miss the point. I have to thank my brother, a long time Brit-Pop fanatic, for introducing me to Dubstar and I'm quite happy he did, hopefully I'll of done you the same favor and you to will enjoy and upcoming star, Dubstar.
