the disappearances of lilies over winter are caused by basal rot.

Unfortunately basal rot is most destructive where soil temperatures are high during the growing season. Now I'm not the person to tell you how to chemically prevent diseases because I refuse to use chemicals and wear the consequences of my actions.

If buying in new bulbs, isolate them for a growing season to make sure they are unaffected. Also, only plant lilies in an area of your garden where you have not planted lilies before. Other simple cultural practices proven useful in reducing the risk from basal rot are the avoidances of organic sources of nitrogen, especially farmyard manures. Are we listening Western Australia and Tasmania? As tempting as it maybe, the use of animal manures puts one behind the eight ball.
