The A.B.A. (Australian Bulb Association) came about as a result of the study of geophytic (bulbous) plants of Southern and South Africa by Dirk Wallace and I for the past 4-5 years. Growing some 2000+ species during this time, many from seed to flower, both of us produced bulb lists and started to communicate with Australian bulb enthusiasts. Having a newsletter as part of our format, it became evident that many folks wanted to join together, have a Newsletter/Journal- to receive updates about their bulbs (and of course the constant "oh" and what is he up to?") and develop needs consistent with the formation of an Association. In fact, during the years 1998, 1999, 2000 and what has been of 2001, Mainly Amaryllids Garden has received up to 8000 communications of some type (faxes, e-mails, phone calls, letters and visits). I have attached a copy of the Statement of Purpose of the A.B.A. It has gotten off to a wonderful start, with many members of the Australian gardening community joining and supporting this new group. I am sure the LONG TERM is assured. I am a fifth generation plantsman or gardener. In my mind, it is up to every succeeding generation to be not only better, but more brilliant than the last. I feel deeply that this is all our responsibility to do this any way we feel we can. NAME The name of the incorporated association is: "Australian Bulb Association." (In these rules called the "Association"). STATEMENT OF PURPOSES The Australian Bulb Association is a non-profit organisation and is constituted to: 1. The cultivation and dissemination of bulbous and geophytic plants. 2. To assist and provide education and information. 3. Support and encourage conservation and research into bulbous and geophytic plants. 4. Bring into close association members of the Australian Bulb Association, and the public, having a common interest in the cultivation of bulbs. 5. Encourage friendship and member participation in bulbs. 6. Provide and operate facilities for these purposes. Solely for the purposes of furthering the purposes set out above the Association shall have power: a) To indemnify any person for any loss or damage incurred as a result of having on behalf of the incorporated association become liable to pay any amount by way of damages or otherwise. b) To subscribe to, become a member of and co-operate with any other association, club or organisation, whether incorporated or not, whose objects are altogether or in part similar to those of the Association provided that the Association shall not subscribe to or support with its funds any other club, association or organisation which does not prohibit the distribution of its income and property among its members to an extent of at least as great as that imposed on the Association under or by virtue of the Rules.
