  • Much to my surprise, crocus continue to do well here at sea level. I was told by another that Crocus go pussy in Victoria; with us, they seem oblivious to this knowledge. Safe in well drained soils, they keep appearing year after year, with renewed vigour. We do get a chill factor on winter nights.

  • Another small flowerer is Hesperantha latifolia. Of the perhaps 65 or so species of Hesperantha I don't think there is one I don't like. Hesperantha are represented by both winter growers and summer growers. All are quick from seed, forming a rootstock, a corm; within a year or two, depending on both the species grown and your growing climate.

  • Ipheions in all their forms are great winter performers. From the common ones to the more rare, all take centre stage over the colder months here flowering well into Spring. Given all our various gardening climates, really the flowers you choose, the ones which do well on short often gloomy overcast days is up to you.

  • Oxalis massoniana, considered close to O. pardalis is a summer flowerer from South Africa.

  • Oxalis convexula is a charming little plant with a tight compact cushion-like habit. Flowers on this are rosy salmon with a sweet yellow throat. Very variable as to flowering. Depending on your climate, this can begin flowering from June. With us, it flowers in September.

  • These Colchicums never fail to prosper here:

  • Colchicum agrippinum - an easy grower with soft lilac mauve flowers with tessellated markings. Early to mid Fall.

  • Colchicum autumnale algeriense - a charming little species with starry pink flowers.

  • Colchicum byzantinum - a real profusion of mauve pink flowers in early Fall.

  • Colchicum cilicicum - a first rate Fall bulb producing a profusion of mauve purple flowers from each corm.

  • Colchicum x DISRAELI - with large tulip shaped goblets of pink lilac,lightly tessellated. Mid Fall flowering.

  • Colchicum lingulatum - a fine small species. Flowers of soft pinkish purple. Flat strap shaped leaves.

  • Colchicum parnassicum - a choice Fall flowering dwarf with starry blossoms of pale lilac.

  • Colchicum speciosum - many large, goblet shaped blooms, lilac in colour. An easy grower.

  • Colchicum speciosum - The Giant: a fine garden plant for a showy display; with large goblet shaped flowers of lilac mauve on long tubes. This makes a marvellous Fall display for your neighbours to coo
