  • Cypella curuzupensis. Up to 40 cm. tall, often over in habitat. This comes from marshy regions within Paraguay.it's yellow and clawed with paler yellowing over the orange yellow at flowering. This one really has to be seen to be described. Flowers in habitat December through to February.

  • Cypella discolor. Plants up to 20cm. Flowers whitish flushed purple, with the centre urn like. The claw surfused purple, the spreading blade with bluish purple markings. The inner segments, set with its claw purple suffused, veined and dotted purple and brown.

  • Cypella elegans. Flowers on this are short lived. Can be bright blue or lilac blue in its solitary flower. The anthers on this are deep blue, with the style arms whitish. Flowering in Argentina in January.

  • Cypella exillis according to Innes(who is now deceased) is a new specific tittle proposed by Ravenna for C. gracilis (Klatt) Bak. a title considered by him to be illegitimate.

And they wonder why, we, the average gardener gets confused!

  • Cypella funcata, plants to 12cm. tall. This little gem, with its dusky orange flowers begins flowering months ahead of the time stated for it in habitat; which is in Brazil and Uruguay, flowering there in 900m high grassy areas in December through until February.

  • Cypella gigantea. Syn: Phalocallis gigantea Kuntze. The leaves on this grow to about one metre as does the stem. Flowers on this are blue, with a lighter blue in the heart, yellowish hued throat. I have never grown this, don't know when it flowers, it comes from central Brazil.

  • Cypella gracilis, a very small ovoid bulb; close to Cypella herbertii. From central Brazil and Paraguay. The flowers are fleeting of bright yellow or tinged lilac, can be up to nearly 5cm across.
  • Cypella hauthalii ssp opalina seen here flowers from seed in under a year, depending on your climate. With me it takes only 7-8 months.

  • Cypella herbertii. Flowers yellow or tinged lilac or brown, flowering August through to September; coming from Brazil, Uraguay and don't cry for me Argentina; they have so many bulbs there, don't think its fair.

  • Cypella laeta to about 35cm. tall, flowers a charming dull orange yellow, looking best on overcast days when the light seems to amplify the hue.The inner segments on this are spotted and lined brown to purple, with the margin lemon yellow, lined with deep brown to almost black. With its orange filaments and purple anthers flowering in Argentina from December through to March and even later, what a sight to first stumble upon in grass fields of the moist regions of Entre Rios and Misiones.
