Although not as brazen as the large-flowered cultivars, many species offer interesting flowers and forms to the discerning gardener. A worthy addition to the Timber Press series of illustrated encyclopedias that includes van Gelderen's Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs, this new book covers alpines and other suitable plants for rock garden settings. Baldassare Mineo is owner of Siskiyou Rare Plant Nursery in Medford, Oregon, one of the world's great sources of plants for rock gardens. His own photographs are supplemented with many by the renowned Austrian horticulturist and photographer Fritz Kummert. Like Timer Press's other encyclopedias, this is truly international in scope and so includes plants that may be difficult to find either in Europe or America; but our experience suggests that this kind of reference book provides the impetus for the nursery trade to introduce varieties from other parts of the world. Baldassare Mineo won the 1987 North American Rock Garden Society's Marcel Le Piniec Award. He has written articles for several plant journals and is a frequent lecturer. He lives at his nursery near Medford, Oregon. approx. 320 pp, 1340 color photos, 8 1/2 x 11", hardcover, 0-88192-432-6,©1999 Do yourself a favour, order this book now while stocks last.
