Collecting bulbs in Australia:

Bulb growing and Collections and the function of this site.

Initially this page was to help folks overcome the lack of information I faced when starting to grow and collect bulbs and Alpines.

Because of stringent quarantine laws, which are needed, it is only the rich or those in business who can afford to import bulbs via a quarantine station. Factored into the reasons for me starting this site was also the need to gather and share information to the growing public on the cultivation of Alpines and Bulbs, though because of my climate now, my focus is mainly aimed at bulbs again.

Secret men's business Until recently the collecting and growing of bulbs within Australasia was a closed shop, unless you belonged to a niche of growers in the know, you grew the pedestrian bulbs, unless you tracked down suppliers from overseas; then enter into long negotiations by letter for seeds.

It is assumed that everybody is connected to the net, this is a fallacy, at least here in Australia. This said, most folks here in Oz can at local libraries connect to the net from schools, work, and friends places.

This page as I said was started to break down the barriers between us all, so we could freely share information out in public view.

Somewhere along the line I lost sight of this for I answer readers phone calls about growers, and even try to explain that the post the reader last read before phoning me was not aimed at them by the poster.

In doing this I am perpetuating this behind the scenes secret man's business. For this I apologise, humbly.

Now in the past some Australian Readers have asked here about starting an Australian Bulb Group, which I have always ignored, because under another hat, I am the Australian Director of the International Bulb Society Chapter here in Oz, and the Australian Representative of IBS for Australia.

Something arose today which needed attention regarding an IBS members Catalogue, one of his customers read into this that IBS was no longer in Australia. Needless to say this is not true, far from it, for there are now some 60 plus members of IBS in Australia and growing almost daily.

Mail from a large number of Australian Readers who do not post in the discussions, who read from work or wherever; say they can not afford to join even one society.
