Most flowers take about two days to open after the bud has pierced the soil and wilt after another two days; sooner if fertilised.
Fertilisation: After cross pollination the subterranean ovary begins to swell and gradually the club shaped,finger-size berry is formed and pushes out of the ground during the last half of Fall. This marks the final third phase of the growth cycle. Fruits: what I left out: During the dormant phase, should you think a storm is likely; cover the bulbs. Do not leave them covered up during high humidity; this will lead to rotting and death. Good air flow with low humidity are needed to grow and flower these treasures. I grow mine in light, cheap but cheerful large plastic pots, deep ones which can be covered during short wet weather or lifted and brought inside - needing two persons to lift; during extended wets. They need central cooling and a steady temperature, if you live in a high humidity region with summer rains, these are, for you , best suited to indoor culture. I think I have covered the basics; if the casual expert is reading, please chip in. (smile) I wonder when they begin flowering with Rachel and Greg in S.A.? Any hints and further comments would be nice kids. Venerable Brian, when do they begin flowering with you? (Surrey, U.K - folks) Dennis T. in Hong Kong, when do they begin flowering for you? Is anyone still reading? Do you think you will give these true treasures a try; they are so rewarding. Bygones - Gary.
