Hippeastrum in pots

© Gary Buckley

When another Year ends one inevitably looks back. Gardening for most of us is a hobby, for some a business and others a form of spiritual expression; in these uncertain times.

When first committing myself to this medium, I thought we could all share our growing experiences. Our gardens are a focal point of the outward expression of our visual hunting over time; expressed in bloom. Most of our posting reader's gardens hold an emotional contact with the viewer. Within some of the images posted this past year there is a palpable intimacy which marks these pages as a little different to regular lists.

Your enthusiasm for gardening with all its possibilities, memories of failures and triumphs, are helping the next person. None of us can hold all information, try as we might.

I hope we can all get back into the swing of posting and helping by posting.

So anyone growing this bulb in pots, please help out .

Hi! I hope you will be able to help me...I came across your article on the internet "Hippeastrum papilio Syn. Butterfly amaryllis" published on August 19, 2002 and would like to ask you a couple questions about the absolutely gorgeous plant. I have a HUGE tub of these bulbs, probably at least 15 - 20 bulbs, including the original mother bulb, planted in 1987!! I have been told to treat this amaryllis the same as any other amaryllis, let the leaves die off, etc...but I don't because it doesn't seem to "die off" during the winter months !! I've also been told these particular bulbs are evergreen...and mine seem to be more evergreen than not!!! Sooo, I'm hoping to settle this for good I hope!!! I do not own my own house, so I have never planted these bulbs in the ground...they live in one very large tub outside in the spring and summer, but are brought inside prior to the 1st frost. I have had some blossoms over the years, but never many in one season...and the potential for many should be great! I fertilize this tub a couple times a year and have to admit, the tub always looks the best in the summer months, obviously! This plant has flowered anywhere from late winter to early summer. I also seem to have the most "problem" with this tub in the winter, while residing inside. Some of the leaves turn brown and die off...but not all of them do this, just some...but once spring arrives, it looks gorgeous again! I've seen a couple times when I thought the whole tub was dying off...only to find fresh, new green leaves growing back.
