The Tall Ships in Scotland

The Tall Ships are coming to Scotland July 30th through August 12th, 1999. Cutty Sark Scots Whisky has been sponsoring the Cutty Sark Tall Ships race since 1972. Ever since, Cutty Sark has worked closely together with the International Sail Training Association, the organisers of the event, in the development of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Races worldwide. Through this sponsorship, thousands of people from all over the world have raced in friendly rivalry at sea and formed lasting friendships ashore. This year they are coming to Greenock Scotland near Glasgow and the Shetland Islands. They will also make some stops in the Hebridean islands. A complete route can be found here. Most people think of a tall ship as a large vessel with sails. This fantastic site has links to information on some of the greatest tall ships.

For race purpose a tall ship can be as small as 30ft waterline length so long as the main method of propulsion is sail. It is a condition of the race that at least half of the people on board each vessel are aged between 15 and 25. For a good explanation of all the details of the race is found here. Everyone is trying to take home this magnificent trophy.
