Names
The name US Airways is put into use officially on 27 February 1997. Before that, it hade been called USAir since its change from Allegheny Airlines in October 1979. The airline was originally called All-American Airlines since its inception until the change to Allegheny in 1953. So the airline, you could say, came full-circle with its name. US Airways contracts with regional companies for its feeder service called US Airways Express. In Summary US Airways history reflects the turmoil and consolidation and history of the American airline industry. Several air carriers that began service locally are consolidated as the industry grew. In US Airways case, several acquisitions seemed to leave acrimony in its wake. One PSA memory web site stated that when USAir took over PSA everything with "PSA" on it was tossed--even the management. A book on corporate management stated that USAir's acquisition of Piedmont resulted in Piedmont's excellent reputation for customer service being lost to the poorer service found on USAir. Again, those who were part of Piedmont were let go. Certainly colorful people have helped to create the US Airways story (a color that might rival Eastern Airlines for colorful leaders). There was opportunity in the airline industry and over the decades, as now, people took advantage of that opportunity.
