from the rail trip, he flew test flights in preparation for the passenger service. Tony Jannus was the pilot of that first scheduled passenger airline flight on January 1, 1914, by default. He knew the plane and how to fly it!

Jannus died in a crash over Germany while conducting test flights for an aircraft manufacturer in Europe several years later.
