Reiki - Page 2

What I would like to share here is a little information about what reiki is and how it has impacted my life and, indirectly, my agoraphobia. The word Reiki is Japanese and translates as "Universal Life Force Energy." I find that to be a bit of a mouthful and also not really very informative. My definition of reiki is that it is unconditional love channeled through the hands and heart of the practitioner. People receiving reiki experience it in a number of ways: the most common things people express are feeling heat or tingling. Many people see colors or simply feel extremely relaxed. Reiki works on an enormous range of problems and symptoms. It can calm anxiety, relieve pain, help release/heal deep emotions. The energy has a mind of it's own. I always say that "reiki does what reiki does." You might go to a practitioner looking for relief from the pain of a sprained ankle and instead tap into deep recesses of emotion. (You'll usually get relief from the ankle pain too, though.) One of the many virtues of reiki is that it can be self administered. It's more fun to have someone else work on you, but you can also treat yourself, which can come in very handy.

Learning reiki requires neither brains nor talent, just willingness and something called an "attunement" to the energy. I believe we are all capable of channeling healing energy even without the initiations. I of think of reiki attunements as a way of reconnecting an unplugged circuit. It makes it easier and gives you guidelines for working on yourself and others.

For agoraphobics there are particular side benefits to being attuned to reiki energy. Don't ask me why, but the attunement process seems to provide a kind of energetic shield for those who are deeply empathic; it seems to help our systems process all psychic energy better and to differentiate more easily between our own feelings and those of others. Since I think empathic emotional overload is a big part of the difficulty many agoraphobics experience out in the world, this is no small blessing. (See my Why Me, Why Us, article: http://suite101.com/article.cfm/agorapho... for further discussion on empathy and agorpahobia.) In addition to being a kind of shield, reiki can be used to help calm panic, heal pain. In channeling this energy, one participates in a series of large and small miracles. Even if you are more inclined to work on others (this is so typical of healers and also, I think of agoraphobics), when you channel the energy, it it moves through your body, so you get a healing each time you give one. Without even asking. Reiki can be given and received long-distance. You can receive a treatment without leaving home if you are not able to get out. This too is handy for those of us for whom journeys into the unknown are not so easy.
