Emotional Freedom Techniques

I've talked a lot so far about what it's like to be agoraphobic, so now maybe it's time to look at some of the therapies and techniques which can help us break out of our self-imposed prisons and live free again. We have done our time. We deserve better.

I started to say that I don't think there are any easy fixes and that's probably true in the long run, but I have recently been experimenting with a therapy called Emotional Freedom Technique or EFT. Aside from feeling kind of silly when you are doing it - it involves tapping on various points on your body and even at one point rolling your eyes, humming and counting to five - it seems to be pretty darned effective. I think that EFT is one of the reasons why I am so at peace during what should be a tumultuous and stressful time in my life. It feels kind of like magic. Of course I have done years and years of work in therapy, I've done meditation, voice dialogue, MAP, massage, Reiki, EMDR, Holographic Repatterning and just about everything you can think of leading up to trying EFT. About the only thing that I haven't tried is (of course) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is supposed to be the most effective therapeutic approach for dealing with Agoraphobia. I will call in an expert when the time comes to talk about that one. But let's get back to EFT and magic.

No matter which therapy you are trying, it's important to remember that healing (like living and evolving) is a process. It's good to remember that change and growth doesn't always come as a big, dramatic "happening." Eggs don't pop out of the hen and turn instantly into chickens. They sit around being eggs for quite a while and then one day the shell cracks open and out comes a new creation. Like magic. And it is a kind of magic it's just slow and subtle magic with a big hurrah finish.

I used EFT to help me deal with my anger about being asked to move out my place of residence so suddenly, with so little time to plan and prepare. It didn't take away my anger, but instead of what usually happens to me - where I kind of become my anger and am very uncomfortable about having such feelings, I just got angry and it was fine with me to be angry. It didn't rule me and it didn't make me feel helpless as it usually does.
