65. The Greed Goes On

I detest complaining or whining and I certainly do not wish to become part of the rhetoric. I realize it is important, however, to not feel helpless or victimized, and voicing our displeasures is part of dealing with stress. I remind everyone that expressing opinions isn’t enough. There comes a time when one simply has to “walk the talk.”

I have a simple solution to deal with some of our ills. It’s logical, it’s easy, it saves money, and no one gets hurt. Well, it may add to the unemployment problem, but social change has never been achieved without some pain or discomfort.

My solution is to begin practicing a new life style regimen. In theory, it involves asking the question “What if?” What if we, the ones with most clout, the consumers, simply stop paying constantly rising prices for everything? When will film studios and theater owners understand that they need us more than we need them? What if we stop buying tickets to baseball games, amusement parks, and supporting lifestyles of those who feel they can do no wrong? What if we simply say “No, no more!”

Instead of going to a movie, go to the library. I guarantee that any novel is far more entertaining than any predictable, formulaic, three act studio film. Not only can a novel be more involving and entertaining, it is far healthier. Need I remind you that most of us don’t exercise our brains enough? I want to emphasize that this suggestion is coming from a lifelong movie freak, but one that has learned to become increasingly discriminating.

If one truly needs heroes to admire and inspire, study up on the biographies of those who have contributed greatly to society and not just taken from it. Choose any area of interest and again, I promise wonderful and amazing things will begin to happen and modify one’s perspectives.

For those who have an addiction to athletic sports, look around and support your local community teams from schools, churches, and any other organizations designed to help motivate our youth or keep the average person active. Get involved to make sure that our children learn good sportsmanship; that it’s not just winning but in enjoying and participating. Children need to develop their values as children, not as adults wanting to be someone else. Fame and riches should not be goals.

What if every single person decided to do one thing to help
