46. Trouble In Paradise

This past week has been fraught with relationship/romance problems... not mine. Every time a friend hits a bump in the road, I mean serious bumps that cause stalling, not just slow downs, I get a phone call, "I need to talk to you."

Mind you, I don’t have a degree in psychology... but I’ll bet I’ve spent as many hours listening to the problems of others as some professionals. These countless hours of commiseration have helped me to develop what I call my "Lucy Van Pelt" outlook on life. If she can hang a shingle and charge five cents for an opinion, so can I.

This is where being a decent age helps immensely. For some reason, my credibility has greatly increased with each birthday. I suppose, it is because when one is over fifty something, it is a given that one has learned some valuable lessons from life experiences and can share some insight.

To a certain extent, yes, this premise is true. (Not to burst anyone’s bubble, but the real truth is that age becomes a moot factor when it comes to romance.) OH... sorry, I digress, I’ll get on with the article.

One of my dearest friends in the world picked up and moved to Kauai about four years ago. She met a man her very first day on the island while hunting for living quarters. Without going into details, just know that things developed slowly, but strongly and steadily. They eventually moved in together. He even surprised her with a ring and proposed marriage last year some time. That’s the rosy picture, the truth is that this relationship has been like riding the proverbial roller coaster. The emotional ripples have reached all the way to California and even left me a bit nauseous, er, I mean a little dizzy.

Now, Kauai is a small island community, everyone knows everyone. My girlfriend was warned of Dobie’s womanizing reputation, (hahaha, not his real name), so it was with much trepidation and caution that she allowed this man into her life. Over time, his constant assurances and behavior was such that the general consensus agreed Dobie had turned over a new leaf and changed his life. He had convinced Zelda, (not my girlfriend’s real name either), that he had never met a woman his equal, someone that could tame his savage beast... yadda yadda yadda. We both believed him. I was looking forward to having an island vacation after attending their nuptials... even though I was never really interested in meeting the guy.
