35. Time For Spring Cleaning

Ah... a crisp, crystal, clear day of sunshine... sparkles of light dancing upon the pool water, irises in bloom, and birds twittering about the feeder infuse one with a burst of energy. While I enjoy the cool weather months immensely, ideal for snuggling and catching up with one’s reading with cups of hot tea... one still anticipates the coming of spring with an inner feeling of gleeful excitement.

Flowers beginning to bloom give a burst of color that literally makes one want to find a field of clover in which to roll around. Oh my gosh, and the fragrances... Star Jasmine in particular, simply causes one to swoon. Is it really necessary to remind anyone to "stop and smell the roses" at this time? Am I the only one more prone to daydreaming every time a bird is heard singing?

Suddenly the nest is looking a little musty and dusty. Am I really ever going to finish reading that stack of magazines? Oh dear, the more I look around, the more apparent it is that there is a great deal more that needs attention than just the stacks of reading, filing, etc. The closet is full of clothing that I haven’t worn in a couple of years, my make-up drawer is full of half used items, and what about the fact that this is really a brand new time for brand new beginnings?

It doesn’t always have to be spring time that infuses one with a mood that craves freshness or a desire for new beginnings, but metaphorically, it’s pretty difficult to resist being caught up in the momentum. Given the idea that if one is a product of one’s environment, perhaps it is as good a place as any to begin. In other words, why not take full advantage of spring time energies to totally clean up one’s act.

My advice here is to NOT look around too closely. One can be too easily overwhelmed with the daunting task at hand. Chances are that there’s not only all the closets, cabinets and drawers, there’s also under the bed, the garage, the attic, etc. I haven’t met one person yet who doesn’t suffer "pack rat syndrome" to some degree. The only cure for "pack rat syndrome" is to move frequently, every few years or so, so don’t feel too badly.

I’m going to digress for a moment here and tell you about a very dear friend of mine. Ruth has been a widow for several years. She has continued to live in her large home where she and her husband raised their four sons. Ruth is a vivacious redhead, her life is nonstop traveling, working for charitable causes, and every spare moment, of which there are very few, is devoted to doing her artwork She resolutely refuses to date other men, stating that there is no one who can possibly replace her dear husband. Ruth is ever bubbly and has boundless energy.
