74. Seniors and Sex, Part II

A slow building "revolution" has been in our midst for some time, now I think it's about to go full throttle. I define "full throttle" as when something hits the mass media and it becomes the topic of conversation in the average household. Then again, maybe not, since the topic is S-E-X. I'm not sure how the topic of sex is handled in the average household with young people, let alone when it involves senior citizens.

In The New York Times, Sunday, April 27, 2003, "Sunday Styles" section, Alex Witchel has written an article about Jane Juska. Ms. Juska's book, "A Round Heeled Woman: My Late-Life Adventures in Sex and Romance, (Villard), is based upon her experiences after placing a personal ad in The New York Review of Books, in the fall of 1999.

Her ad reads: "Before I turn 67 -- next March -- I would like to have a lot of sex with a man I like. If you want to talk first, Trollope Works for me." Ms. Juska is now 70 and her picture in the newspaper shows her smiling exuberantly and looking exactly the way she is expected to look. By this I mean simply that she is an attractive, average, mature woman who appears comfortable in her skin and doesn't look as if she has had any plastic surgery. She is currently promoting her book and public speaking to various groups.

I say BRAVO to Jane Juska, bouquets of flowers, and a standing ovation for her brash courage and speaking truthfully to get what she wants. There are too few Jane Juskas around and I applaud her spirit. Most of us "older women" simply lead our lives quietly, preferring not to draw too much attention to our sex lives. Now, ALL the stereotypes about older women not being sexual creatures can be thrown out forever.

On the same day that this article appeared in the paper, I also happened to catch part of the television program, "Six Feet Under." The story's mother is attracted to a much younger man. The relationship between these two is very awkward, both attempting intimacy but with minimal success so far. I mention this program only because it adds fuel to the topic of "Seniors and Sex." I'm sure there are many other examples out there, but these were the two that motivated me to address the subject.

Okay, Okay, so I've restated the obvious, that age is not a factor in regard to anyone's sexuality, male or female. I haven't read Ms. Juska's book, but I'm sure she has discovered that the quality of sex has a great deal to do with the quality of relationship. I'm sure also, that while she may not have been seeking marriage, companionship still plays a big role with her sex partners. "Sex with a man I like."
