Me? A step mom?

For as long as I can remember, I've always dreamed of having children. I had it all planned out. I would have two kids and hopefully the boy would be born first so that my second child, a girl, would have a big brother. My kids would grow up in a one story home with a pool, their own rooms, pets of their choice, and two loving parents. Step children were never apart of my happy little fantasy.

We were on our third date when Darryl decided to tell me he was the father of three children, a 14 year old son, and two daughters, ages 6 and 2. I wasn't really surprised he had kids...just a little worried. When I left his house that night, I drove home thinking of movies, books, or actual experiences that I had been told, concerning women who had been or still were involved with men who had children from previous relationships. Would his kids some day yell in my face and say to me, "We don't have to do what you say because your not our mother?" Would they think I was good enough for their father? Would they ever learn to love me?

His six year old daughter was the first one to capture my heart and vice versa. He brought her to my house one Sunday afternoon and she was simply adorable. My uneasiness and worrying seemed like a waste of time as I talked with the little girl. She told me about school, her dog, her friends, and her toys. She was very energetic and talkative, and I loved every minute of the time we spent together. We played catch and made ice cream sundaes together after Darryl left her with me while he went to get a haircut. I was completely taken with her, and when she drew me a picture with a heart that said 'I Love Sharae' in the middle, I knew the feelings were mutual.

I met his 2 year daughter about a week later. She was just a little bit harder to win over. She was mommy's little girl, and seemed a bit jealous of the attention I was getting from her father. I noticed how she kept talking about her mom a lot, and I wondered if this two year old had something up her sleeve. However, by the end of the night I had made some headway. She remembered my name and even gave me a hug good-bye before I left. It took me a few more weeks to get her to come around, but I finally succeeded. I've even spoiled her...she loves asking me for piggyback rides whenever I see her.
